Sakharov Youth Seminar

Sakharov Youth Seminar Shevaun Rooney and Adam Vassallo, two Level 13 students studying at St Martin’s College Sixth Form, attended the Sakharov Youth Seminar for European Parliament Ambassador Schools in Strasbourg, France, this week. The students also had the opportunity to attend the Sakharov Prize for Freedom of Thought award ceremony. This prestigious prize is awarded each year by the European Parliament to honour individuals and organisations defending human rights and fundamental freedoms. This year the Prize was awarded to the People of Ukraine. Shevaun and Adam were accompanied by their Advanced level History teacher, Paul Portelli.

Cambridge Literary Festival.

Cambridge Literary Festival. As part of our commitment to ongoing and meaningful professional development, a group of teachers from our English team at St Martin's College attended the Cambridge Literary Festival. This visit reflects the efforts of our College to encourage a love of reading and our belief in the importance of chronicling human experience even through fiction. The author-led sessions inspired a critical consideration of how wonderful their works can lead to growth and learning in the classroom.

Muza Outing

Muza Outing A group of Level 12 and 13 Art students from St Martin’s College Sixth Form visited MUZA, Malta's National Community Art Museum. The students had the opportunity to appreciate the main highlights of this collection which was followed by a sketching session on site. Students observed and created studies of favourite artworks from different genres and periods. This visit forms part of INTEREtching, a St Martin’s College Art project in collaboration with artist-printmaker Jesmond Vassallo and supported by Arts Council Malta.

Professional Learning

Professional Learning Grazia Strano, Learning Area Leader of International Languages attended a training course at Dante Alighieri in Rome last weekend. The course focused on the choices and resources that teachers have at their disposal to favour the learning of Italian in the cognitive development phase of students between 10 and 15 years old. The course also tackled multilingualism, neuroscience, playful teaching and assessing students' linguistic skills. Several innovative workshops were conducted by experts in didactic skills.

COP27

COP27 A group of St Martin’s College students from L11, L12 and L13 will be actively participating in a Live Stream Q&A Session with Dr Karl Vella, CHSMC's Sustainability Consultant. Dr Vella is attending COP27 Climate Conference in Egypt. This session will take place on Monday 14th November at 11:30am. Today, a preparatory meeting was held between Ms Bernie, Ms Sabina Sixsmith, Ms Angela Bianchi who will be facilitating the COP27 Live Stream session and the students who will be participating.

Brussels Trip

Brussels Trip A group of St Martin’s College Sixth Form students spent 6 days in Brussels, Bruges and Ghent between the 27th October and 1st November 2022. They learnt about the EU institutions and of job opportunities within the EU. They attended the opening ceremony of the Youth Forum which was held at the European Parliament where they were welcomed by the President of the European Parliament, Dr Roberta Metsola. They also visited the Maltese and Slovene Translation Unit of ECOSOC and the Committee of Regions. Students also engaged in team building activities including a scavenger hunt that led them to various parts of the town. The winning team were treated to a taste of Belgian waffles. This was truly a memorable as well as enriching experience for all students.
