Bernice Sammut Attard, CHSMC alumna, is a Maltese concert pianist and violinist currently studying piano in Paris with Marian Rybicki and violin with Ruth Hahn. A winner of the Malta Eurovision Young Musicians 2018, she has performed concertos with various orchestras across Europe, most recently playing Rachmaninoff’s 2nd Piano Concerto with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra.
Ever since competing in the 2018 Eurovision Young Musicians Competition, Bernice Sammut Attard has gone from strength to strength, quickly emerging as one of Malta’s top young talents.
Here’s what Bernice said about her experience at the school:
“Looking back at my time at both Chiswick House School & St Martin’s College, I feel an immense sense of gratitude for the foundation they gave me. I was provided with a strong academic foundation, while also being encouraged to explore my musical interests.
The teachers were great role models, who showed genuine understanding and care whilst always pushing each student to their full potential. The nurturing and supportive environment really encouraged me to grow, not just academically, but also as a person. The importance of hard work, curiosity, resilience and respect were constantly highlighted throughout my time at the schools and these values continue to guide me in everything I do today.
Since finishing my studies at SMC, I have furthered my musical studies in the UK at a top music school in Manchester (Chetham’s School of Music) and at world-renowned conservatoires in Glasgow (Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) and now in Paris, France (École Normale de Musique de Paris). I am forever grateful to the strong foundation I received from my schooling in Malta, which helped me be able to dream big and not be afraid of change and all the challenges that come along with moving abroad.
Beyond academics, the lifelong friendships, memories and lessons learned throughout my time at CHSMC make me feel proud to have been a student and now alumna.”
More about her outstanding achievements:
Bernice performed at prestigious venues including the Royal Festival Hall, Bridgewater Hall and the Stoller Hall in the UK, at the Manoel Theatre, the Mediterranean Conference Centre, Pjazza Teatru Rjal in Malta and at Salle Cortot in Paris.
She holds a Master of Arts in Music (2023) and a First-Class Honours Bachelor of Music (2022) from the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. At the age of 16, she was the first Maltese to attend the UK’s prestigious music school Chetham’s School of Music. Bernice commenced her studies at an early age in Malta, studying piano with Karen Briscoe and violin with Marcelline Agius.
