Miriana Gafà attended St. Martin’s College Sixth Form from 2013 to 2015, initially focusing on Chemistry and Biology at A-level with aspirations for a career in medicine. However, midway through her second year, she realised her true passion lay in Maltese language and culture. With the support of the head of school and her Maltese lecturer, she seamlessly transitioned to advanced Maltese studies alongside her science subjects. This pivotal decision allowed her to successfully obtain her Maltese A-level, opening doors to pursue Maltese as her major at the University of Malta.
In 2018, Miriana graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Maltese from the University of Malta. Building on this foundation, she later completed a Master’s degree in Teaching and Learning, qualifying as a Maltese language teacher in 2020.
During her first year at St Martin’s College Sixth Form, Miriana was invited to participate in debating workshops and activities that culminated in a three-day competition organised by the English-Speaking Union of Malta. Initially hesitant due to her shyness and lack of confidence in her English-speaking skills, she eventually accepted the challenge with encouragement from her family and teachers. Competing against teams from various sixth forms, my team ultimately won the competition. Later that year, we also had the unique opportunity to debate against Maltese politicians. This experience had a profound impact on her personal growth, helping her step out of my comfort zone, improve her public speaking skills, and build lasting confidence, which she credits as skills that continue to benefit her in my teaching career today.
Currently, Miriana is dedicated to teaching Maltese as a secondary school teacher in a state school, where she focuses on fostering both language skills and an appreciation for Maltese culture. She also serves as a part-time lecturer at MCAST, where she teaches Maltese to foreigners. Miriana states that her role is deeply rewarding as she is able to engage with motivated adults from diverse backgrounds eager to integrate into our local community through language. She goes on to say that balancing these two roles is incredibly fulfilling, highlighting how her professional life is driven by a commitment to education and a deep love for our native language.
